A red ribbon day at Skwo:wech Elementary
The celebrations around the new Skwo:wech Elementary continue as the school hosted a formal red ribbon event yesterday!
A small group of community leaders, staff, students and parents filled the gym and enjoyed a series of short speeches and reflections … before students shared their gratitude poems, some beautiful and moving musical performances and then lead guests on tours of all their favourite corners of the school.
The speakers included Chief Rhonda Larrabee, the Honourable Minister Whiteside, Board Chair Gurveen Dhaliwal, PAC Chair Jen Knight, Principal Kathleen Chad, and the VP who played MC, Darren Elves.
Each of the speakers, including the student performers, reflected on the light, the spaces intended to spill into as part of how collaboration was designed into the school, the excitement that can be felt, and the significance of the re-naming process.
As we continue to be mindful of event sizes, the invite list was somewhat limited. But, the event was livestreamed into classrooms, and the recording will be shared soon with the school community.
We thank all those community leaders, staff, parents and students who participated and witnessed this important celebration with us. And we look forward to opportunities in the coming school year to invite more of the community in.
