At New Westminster Schools, we are supporting the success of our learners by focusing on the skills and competencies they need to be productive and successful citizens in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<p>We are doing so in the context of <a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum-updates\"><strong>BC\u2019s Redesigned Curriculum<\/strong><\/a>, which was implemented in BC in Kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms in the 2016\/17 school year and is slated for implementation across all grades in 2019\/2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Why a new Curriculum?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/curriculum_model-640.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4433\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/curriculum_model-640.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/curriculum_model-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/curriculum_model-640-150x150.jpg 150w\" alt=\"curriculum_model 640\" width=\"378\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a>The curriculum in British Columbia has been modernized to meet the changing needs of our students.\u00a0 Students today require skills and competencies that will help them thrive in an ever-changing world.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BC&#8217;s redesigned curriculum<\/a> aims to personalize learning, making it more student-centered and flexible.\u00a0 There is a focus on literacy and numeracy skills, as well as an emphasis on deep, active learning. The BC curriculum is concept based and competency driven to ensure that students are engaged in learning opportunities that go beyond memorizing facts. \u00a0The \u201cKnow-Do-Understand\u201d framework supports deep learning through active engagement.\u00a0 \u00a0For more information about the redesigned curriculum, please click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The redesigned curriculum puts the student at the center of learning and emphasizes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>greater flexibility to allow for personalization;<\/li>\n<li>increased opportunities for students to pursue their passions and interests;<\/li>\n<li>a focus on foundational skills of literacy and numeracy, with a strong emphasis on concepts and \u201cbig ideas\u201d that allow for deeper learning;<\/li>\n<li>Aboriginal culture and perspectives integrated throughout all grades and areas of learning;<\/li>\n<li>the development of core competencies (thinking, communication, social and personal).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Curriculum Model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Know-Do-Understand framework consists of three elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What students will\u00a0<em>know<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The Content \u2013 important knowledge within each area of learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What students will\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The curricular competencies \u2013 skills, strategies and processes that students develop over time to engage deeply with areas of learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What students will\u00a0<em>understand<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cBig Ideas\u201d \u2013 the most important concepts in an area of learning that go beyond a single grade and contribute to future learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Assessment and Reporting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assessment and reporting practices are being refreshed to better align with the curriculum redesign.\u00a0 Assessments will continue to be rigorous and based on the learning standards and competencies identified in the curriculum.\u00a0 However, a more flexible and personalized approach to assessment will be taken that emphasizes measuring deep learning and complex thinking. Parents as partners in education will be included in ongoing communication about student learning. Educators will support students in a number of ways including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>providing timely and meaningful feedback,<\/li>\n<li>multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning, and<\/li>\n<li>engagement in self-assessment, reflection and goal setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BC&#8217;s Redesigned Curriculum Today\u2019s children live in a society of constant change.
