The French Immersion Program is designed to teach French to non-French speaking children and is offered across Canada. In French Immersion, students follow the BC Provincial Curriculum: Building Student Success, but the language of instruction and communication is French. New Westminster offers both Early (K\/1 entry) and Late (grade 6 entry) French Immersion.<\/p>\n<p>Goals of French Immersion programs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students become functionally bilingual and can understand and communicate in French.<\/li>\n<li>Students develop linguistic and cultural knowledge and appreciation that fosters intercultural understanding.<\/li>\n<li>Students may pursue further education and careers in French.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>French Immersion information night<\/h3>\n<p>Programs of Choice parent information sessions are part of our Discover New Westminster Schools night, which takes place early January.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UfBDJRi2kB4?si=x8l0RITYae9tldW0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Early French Immersion (K\/1 entry)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Early French Immersion (EFI) begins in Kindergarten\/Grade 1 (if space is available) and continues on through to grade 12.<\/li>\n<li>All instruction is in French for the first four years.<\/li>\n<li>English Language Arts is introduced in grade 4.<\/li>\n<li>Exploratory courses are offered in English at middle school.<\/li>\n<li>Students from Early and Late French Immersion join at grade 8 and continue in French Immersion at the secondary level.<\/li>\n<li>The percentage of French instruction decreases gradually as students progress through the secondary grades.<\/li>\n<li>Early French Immersion is offered at \u00c9cole Herbert Spencer Elementary (Grades K-5), \u00c9cole Qayqayt Elementary (Grades K-5) and \u00c9cole Lord Tweedsmuir (Grades K-5).<\/li>\n<li>Enrolment is limited to one kindergarten entry class at each French Immersion school annually. Catchment boundaries are in effect for this program (see <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/EFI-catchment-areas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EFI catchment areas<\/a> or use the <a href=\"https:\/\/mybaragar.com\/index.cfm?event=page.SchoolLocatorPublic&amp;DistrictCode=BC40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school catchment locator tool<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Late French Immersion (Grade 6 entry)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Late French Immersion (LFI) is offered at \u00c9cole Glenbrook Middle School starting in grade 6. These students also carry on in French to the end of Grade 12.<\/li>\n<li>Similar to the Early Immersion Program, students study almost entirely in French in grade 6, with Exploratory courses and Career Education usually offered in English.<\/li>\n<li>English Language Arts is reintroduced in grade 7.<\/li>\n<li>Enrolment is limited to two grade six entry classes at \u00c9cole Glenbrook Middle School annually.
