And whether or not we are individually impacted by racism, we are all negatively impacted by the systems that perpetuate it &#8230; afterall, it was Maya Angelou that said, &#8220;The truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without understanding and combatting all forms or racism, it will still be prevalent in people&#8217;s lives. Individual racism can be deliberate, or the individual may act to perpetuate or support racism without knowing that is what they are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Telling a racist joke, or using a racial stereotype (even when it&#8217;s being presented as a &#8220;good&#8221; thing).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding people of colour whom you do not know personally, but not whites whom you do not know personally (e.g., white people crossing the street to avoid a group of Latino people; people locking their doors when they see African American families in a their neighborhood; judging someone&#8217;s perceived skills, experience or competency based on their name; or not hiring a person of colour because \u201csomething doesn\u2019t feel right\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accepting things as they are (a form of collusion).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Believing in the inherent superiority of whites over other groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SOURCE:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/19E7pj9rZCaiUJhNTGYTzE7tFNLYdUh1U\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Flipping the Script: White Privilege and Community Building<\/em><\/a> by Maggie Potapchuk, Sally Leiderman, Donna Bivens, and Barbara Major (2005).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interpersonal racism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interpersonal racism occurs between individuals. These various levels of racism operate in a lockstep model and function together as a whole system. These levels are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individual \/ Interpersonal (within interactions between people)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Institutional (within institutions and systems of power)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structural or societal (among&nbsp;institutions and across society)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways \u201csystemic racism\u201d and \u201cstructural racism\u201d are synonymous.
