That&#8217;s\u00a0 providing the &#8220;opportunity to adapt and make room for a new knowledge-based economy&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; evident in the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newwestcity.ca\/innovation-week\/events\/4827.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intelligent New West<\/a> initiative, for instance, which supports dialogue around the idea of becoming a SMART city focused on technology, collaboration and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>The annual\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newwestrecord.ca\/community\/brain-power-and-people-power-at-innovation-week-in-new-westminster-1.23154061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovation Week <\/a>event in New Westminster, supported by Amazon among others, also showcases not only technology, but the creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and &#8220;new ways of looking at things&#8221; across the school &#8212; encouraging student use of technology\u00a0 to express their learning in new and different ways.\u00a0The fact that\u00a0students are taking\u00a0on projects\u00a0that they\u00a0design and\u00a0drive themselves is also changing the traditional model of\u00a0\u00a0learning, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen students\u00a0are following their passions, they are in control of their own learning, and we encourage that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tyler said that students at NWSS\u00a0 are spending hours and hours\u00a0in class, after school, and at lunch time on projects that fire up their imaginations, inspire collaboration across disciplines, and allow them to be creative with electronics, robotics, 3-D printing and design using VEX, AutoCAD software, programmable electronics and more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10017\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_3531.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10017 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_3531-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_3531-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_3531.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NWSS Principal John Tyler says when students follow their passions, they are in control of their learning&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As both Mayor\u00a0Cot\u00e9\u00a0and Board of Education Chair Mark Gifford somewhat woefully confessed, most of the trends in robotics and coding are beyond the dinosaur age they both feel more familiar with.\u00a0 Gifford point to the books that lined the wall behind him and said they were more in his comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the student&#8217;s projects on display included a video games arcade that featured some 2000 game options; a mechanical robotic demonstration, and an electronic mask modelled on the Marvel Legends Iron Man character whose state-of-the-art suit of armour was designed to &#8216;crush crime and obliterate injustice.&#8217;\u00a0 The mask featured\u00a0 LED glowing eyes and took more than 60 hours of work on a 3D printer to produce. and electronic sound effects.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering and Technology Education teacher Valentin Pontier, who\u00a0\u00a0is among a group of teachers helping guide various activities, noted that technology projects that incorporate\u00a0applied skills allow students to combine the\u00a0theoretical and the tangible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to encourage creativity in design, prototyping, and building projects while facilitating critical thinking and problem solving \u2013 and to have fun while learning,&#8221;
