Another 950 students in grades 2 and 5 will be seated in the stands to witness the event.<\/p>\n<p>The school district festivities will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Queen\u2019s Park stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big day, \u201c said Karen Catherwood, principal of \u00c9cole Qayqayt Elementary School and one of the key organizers of the district event.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mcbride_n-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10540 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mcbride_n-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mcbride_n-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mcbride_n-640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\n<blockquote><p>About 950 grade 2 and 5 students gather in the stands to witness May Day dancing and the crowning of the May Queen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Garlands, circle dances, and the crowning of the May Queen<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOur students will have spent two months of preparations for this day, practicing their dances two to three times a week in each of our schools during gym time,\u201d\u00a0 said Catherwood. For the eight schools involved, it&#8217;s a major focus every spring.<\/p>\n<p>The Maypole dances are a tradition associated with various European folk festivals and involve circle dances and intricate steps weaving multi-coloured garlands around a tall, <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowninghands_n-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10526\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowninghands_n-640-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowninghands_n-640-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/crowninghands_n-640.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a>colourfully decorated wooden pole. These will be performed by grade 4 students.<\/p>\n<p>Folk dances \u2013 to the traditional nursery rhyme &#8220;Nuts in May&#8221;\u00a0 and the English country dance tune &#8220;Gathering Peascods&#8221; &#8211; are performed by grade 3 students.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, two grade five student representatives from each of seven elementary schools and one middle school serve as the Royal Suite. Earlier this spring, Betty Sutton was named May Queen and Liam Banziger the Royal Consort. Both are from Connaught Heights elementary school.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Royal Suite students are coordinated and supervised by community volunteers, and will participate in numerous other community events &#8211;\u00a0 including the City of New Westminster&#8217;s May Day Banquet, Community Heritage Picnic dances, a\u00a0 May Day Tea run by the Hyack Festival Association, and the Hyack Festival&#8217;s International Parade.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/royalsuitewave844_n-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10545 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/royalsuitewave844_n-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/royalsuitewave844_n-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/royalsuitewave844_n-640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\n<blockquote><p>The Royal Suite is made up of\u00a0 grade 5 student representatives from eight schools who participate in the school district event as well as numerous other community May Day activities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Significant preparations for a major event&#8230;.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Catherwood has been involved in the May Day district event for 29 years and has served on the district&#8217;s May day committee for 14 years. This year she and vice-principal \u00c9cole Qayqayt Vice-Principal Ardyth Moorcroft volunteered to take on the task, starting in February, of organizing the activities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/facilitaties-maypole-1-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10528\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/facilitaties-maypole-1-640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/facilitaties-maypole-1-640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/facilitaties-maypole-1-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Some of the logistics include working with the City of New Westminster&#8217;s Parks and Recreation, which prepares the grounds and sets up the sound system and bleachers.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The school district&#8217;s maintenance and operations staff set up the maypoles and work collaboratively with city crews both before and after the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Catherwood noted that getting to and from the park on the district May Day is a significant undertaking.\u00a0More than 900 students walk from five elementary schools to Queen&#8217;s Park &#8211; from \u00c9cole Herbert Spencer, FW Howay, Richard McBride, Lord Kelvin and \u00c9cole Qyayqayt elementary schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To ensure their safety, the school district works with city police who typically control traffic and manage intersections as the students make their journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some 90 teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/firefighters_n-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10529\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/firefighters_n-640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/firefighters_n-640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/firefighters_n-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and volunteer chaperones are also required to be in place to escort students and be present for the duration of the event.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 14 buses have been hired this year to transport 704 students and 105 adults to and from the park.
