Millions must collect and carry water on a daily basis just to met their basic needs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0829-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10922 \" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0829-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a>For one of the students at \u00c9cole\u00a0Glenbrook, carrying her four-litre container around the park was an opportunity to think of what it&#8217;s like to be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trackyourimpact.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/19\/clean-water-project-educates-girls-in-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a girl in a rural part of a country like Kenya, in Africa<\/a>, who must walk for several hours a day for water.<\/p>\n<p>For another, it was a window into the experience of children closer to home here in Canada &#8211; where for many First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis communities, basic access to clean water is still a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/3238948\/first-nations-drinking-water-crisis-liberals-promise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sight of hundreds of students making the rounds of the New Westminster neighbourhood carrying water jugs made its own splash, as students raised their\u00a0 awareness of a human right that so many take for granted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6560-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10854 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6560-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6560-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6560-640-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00c9cole <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Glenbrook Middle School&#8217;s Leadership Club organized and led the &#8220;WE Walk for Water&#8221; event\u00a0on May 9th and 10th.\u00a0 Pictured here are Sam, Serina, Kayla, Paige Sofia and Syriana. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Taking the lead&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u00c9cole<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Glenbrook Middle School&#8217;s (EGMS) Leadership Club organized and led the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.we.org\/we-schools\/program\/campaigns\/we-walk-for-water\/?utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=2018_Spring:_WWD&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwre_XBRDVARIsAPf7zZho84yg6umUI8zY9UkIuFOxB7O07uK8GNuj_RbBcNHEjVc7TPmTB6EaAsMLEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WE Walk for Water<\/a> event. Their goal: to raise $1,000 and make a difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"> School classes signed up for 20-minute time blocks to participate as water walkers on May 9th and 10th, while teachers incorporated related learning into their classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With roughly 625 EGMS students carrying four litres each, they together carted a grand total of 2,500 litres of water. Most people who must transport water to meet their basic needs carry 20 litres each.<\/p>\n<p>School Counselor Jane Osborne invited the students to &#8220;feel the weight of the jug you&#8217;re carrying and imagine what it would be like to carry five times that amount of water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>An experiential approach to understanding basic human rights&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Osborne explained that the experiential learning approach for students at EGMS can help deepen understanding of the fact that water is a basic human right that is denied to millions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6528-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10848 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6528-640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6528-640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6528-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;We turn on the tap and get running water when we want it,&#8221; Osborne reminded school classes.<\/p>\n<p>She challenged the students to consider what they would not be doing if every day they had to collect and carry water to meet their basic needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There would be no time for school &#8211; or play,&#8221; noted several students. For adults, the need to access water would severely limit their ability to get employment.<\/p>\n<p>The leadership club wanted to do something about that.<\/p>\n<p>The EGMS Water Walkers campaign as of May 16 had met their target of raising $1,000.
