thanks to the retired educators running the BASES Family Thrift Store in Burnaby<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Turning thrift into new opportunities for after-school fun and learning&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>It can start with an after-school program like <em>Numbers and Nibbles, <\/em>making math fun for kindergarten to grade 2 students.<\/p>\n<p>It can end up making a big difference for kids in school as their comfort-level with math boosts their learning success.<\/p>\n<p>A new pilot project supporting after-school programs is being launched in New Westminster Schools\u00a0 &#8211; thanks to a group\u00a0of Burnaby-based retired educators and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>They have been running the <a href=\"http:\/\/basesburnaby.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BASES family thrift store<\/a>\u00a0on Edmonds Street in Burnaby in support of programs and activities for at-risk children and families since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>They are now sharing their generosity in neighboring New Westminster Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Their $10,000 donation is supporting programs like two upcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Rec-and-Read-Summer-Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rec and Read <\/a>summer camps for elementary students in New Westminster Schools, said Rick Bloudell, district community schools coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>The camps are designed to p<span style=\"color: #000000;\">rovide an extra boost for students who can benefit from intensive reading help &#8211; with the guidance of an early literacy teacher as well as volunteer reading buddies through the New Westminster Public Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;For kids struggling with literacy and numeracy, these kinds of programs can help overcome the fear that many have,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Rec and Read program is being held at the Qayqayt Neighbourhood Learning Centre in July.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 BASES-supported pilot project at New Westminster Schools will also lead to a middle school program, a Numbers and Nibbles programs at two schools, and a popular Parents Night Out session, which hosts information nights on social media awareness, safer schools and other issues of interest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their support is huge,&#8221; said Bloudell.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Helping to level the playing field&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>As Sharon Domass, a board member with BASES ( Burnaby Association of the South East Side)\u00a0 explained to the Board of Education this week, the educators turned their desire to support kids&#8217; programming in 2011 into a successful charitable organization that six years later raised $150,000 to support students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11670 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0277-640-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0277-640-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0277-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Their BASES Family Thrift Store has\u00a0\u00a0been voted the #1 thrift store in Burnaby and now runs with the help of six employees and 60 volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>Their work has led to hundreds of programs for kids in elementary and secondary schools in the last six years &#8211; from basketball, homework clubs and bike programs, to Lego, &#8220;Mad Science&#8221; and camp experiences.
