As of Thursday, it was 552 days to the finish line, slated for the spring of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re on budget and on schedule,&#8221; said Grant Lachmuth, Chief Project Officer for the New Westminster Secondary School Replacement Project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/thumbnail_New-NWSS_19x14_Grand-Plaza_Web-640-300x223.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12908 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/thumbnail_New-NWSS_19x14_Grand-Plaza_Web-640-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/thumbnail_New-NWSS_19x14_Grand-Plaza_Web-640-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/thumbnail_New-NWSS_19x14_Grand-Plaza_Web-640-300x223-200x150.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Lachmuth was highlighting the status of the $106.5 million project &#8211; the largest school investment in BC history &#8211; for the newly elected New Westminster Schools Board of Education this week. He also offered\u00a0 a projection of what will unfold in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve reached a milestone&#8221;\u00a0 in the school construction process, he said, as work switches gears from laying the foundation to building the superstructure.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>We&#8217;re building up&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>He said the public will start to see evidence of the new school &#8220;really taking shape now&#8221; as the steel structure rises up from the ground. That will lead to growing visual evidence of the size and magnitude of the new school &#8211;\u00a0 which is designed to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for 1,900 grade 9 to 12 students.<\/p>\n<p>Some eight truckloads of steel are expected to arrive at the site this month.<\/p>\n<p>Lachmuth noted construction to date has focused on sub-excavation, with the footings and foundation of the new school nearly completed. Some 250 soil anchors have been <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7627.jpg-640.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12882 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7627.jpg-640-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7627.jpg-640-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7627.jpg-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>drilled into the ground &#8211; with the last three or four anchors to be installed this week.\u00a0 With concrete footings and the foundation poured,\u00a0 backfilling will bring the site up to the level required for the new school.<\/p>\n<p>As well, storm, sanitary and water lines have been completed along Sixth Street and extended along Seventh Street between the new school site and the current school.\u00a0 This week, NWSS was linked up to the new water lines.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Learn more about the New Westminster Secondary School project<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/nwss-replacement-project\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The warm and relatively drier weather over the past couple of months has been very helpful in ensuring the project is on schedule, Lachmuth noted.<\/p>\n<p>While the idea of a countdown to the completion date is a helpful marker for public interest, the countdown also serves as a reminder to the numerous work crews on site\u00a0 &#8211; from rebar teams to foundation and steel structure crews.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a recognition of both the schedule as well as the momentum that&#8217;s increasingly building up toward completion of the new school &#8211; the only secondary school in the City of New Westminster and one of the largest in BC.<\/p>\n<p>The current school was built in 1949, is outdated, and requires seismic remediation.
