{"id":38497,"date":"2022-01-31T14:57:17","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T22:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/?p=38497"},"modified":"2022-01-31T14:57:17","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T22:57:17","slug":"celebrating-black-history-in-canada-through-tessellation-and-portraiture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/celebrating-black-history-in-canada-through-tessellation-and-portraiture\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Black history in Canada through tessellation and portraiture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Timed to open at the start of Black History Month, NWSS art students are getting to share <a href=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/black-canadians-in-black-white-and-grey\/\">their tessellation and portraiture work<\/a> in a new way this year: starting February 2nd (and running through to June 19th), the black and white depictions will be on display at The Community Gallery at The Anvil Centre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22724 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CelebratingBlackHistory-b690h-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CelebratingBlackHistory-b690h-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CelebratingBlackHistory-b690h.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/>Moved by a push for greater social justice, the students researched prominent figures from Black History in Canada and shared their contributions in black and white tessellation patterns and portraits.<\/p>\n<p>Equal parts \u2018black\u2019 and \u2018white\u2019 in these works challenges a Eurocentric-lens that is too often applied when discussing history by featuring People of Colour (POC) and Black Canadians in an equally starring role.
