The education planning committee meeting was hosted at \u00c9cole Lord Tweedsmuir with parents, teachers and guests on hand for the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"142gn-0-0\">School Principal Sandra Cottingham and Vice-Principal Debbie Ramen welcomed trustees and shared the story of a school-wide garden project that was the highlight of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"142gn-0-0\">But instead of relying on a \u00a0slide presentation, e<\/span>veryone in the packed library meeting room joined Cottingham on a tour to see it all firsthand.<\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"578ge-0-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6297 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/September-Tweeds-meeting-pic-640-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/September-Tweeds-meeting-pic-640-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/September-Tweeds-meeting-pic-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For board chair Kelly Slade-Kerr, outdoor learning included walking across the cool damp of the school field in the dark, meandering through the garden beds, and tasting a perfect, ripe tomato on offer. It was a great chance to enjoy the fruits of a project that involved every student last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"dc7d1-0-0\">Cottingham and Ramen explained that students used geometry, problem-solving, math, planning and teamwork to build raised garden beds from scratch. The wider school community was consulted from the beginning and helped water the plants over the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"5v329-0-0\">&#8220;The garden has been a goal and a dream for our teachers &#8211; who have taken on place-based outdoor learning and connected it to the curriculum,&#8221; said Ramen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"f43ue-0-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6301 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/school-kids-and-dirt-640-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/school-kids-and-dirt-640-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/school-kids-and-dirt-640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/>Phase 1 is now complete. Phase 2 and 3 will include a sensory plant garden, a dry river bed complete with salmon mosaics, and trees!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"7irsb-0-0\">&#8220;It was a pretty big, complex project,&#8221; said Cottingham, who told trustees that when huge mounds of soil and bark mulch arrived on the school grounds, she knew the &#8216;point of no return&#8221; had arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"2l2s2-0-0\">&#8220;Our students took what they had on graph paper and transposed that into reality. The outcome is amazing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"dhjhg-0-0\">For trustee Jonina Campbell, the garden is a perfect example of the proposed new vision for New Westminster Schools &#8211; as &#8220;a place where students love to learn.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 14, 2017 &#8211; School trustees got a taste of outdoor learning during their first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 12.
