{"id":6655,"date":"2017-09-29T18:57:44","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T22:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/?p=6655"},"modified":"2018-03-13T23:29:50","modified_gmt":"2018-03-14T03:29:50","slug":"every-child-matters-orange-shirt-day-for-a-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/every-child-matters-orange-shirt-day-for-a-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Every Child Matters: Orange Shirt Day for a Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6658\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OSD-2-USE-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OSD-2-USE-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/OSD-2-USE-640-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\n<p><em>September 27, 2017<\/em> &#8211; Trustees and staff wore orange shirts in the spirit of Reconciliation Tuesday as the Board of Education passed a motion acknowledging Orange Shirt Week from September 25-29 at New Westminster Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Orange Shirt Day\u00a0honours survivors of the residential school system in Canada<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-style: normal; font-weight: 300;\">\u201cThe purpose of the week isn\u2019t just to wear an orange shirt \u2013 but to be a marke<\/span>r o<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">f advances of the work that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trc.ca\/websites\/reconciliation\/index.php?p=312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth and Reconciliation Commission<\/a> is calling for \u2013 and for our schools and community to be a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal learners and for all kids,\u201d said school board vice-chair Mark Gifford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The national movement in support of Orange Shirt Day, which falls on Saturday, Sept. 30 this year,\u00a0 was started in 2013 by Phyllis Jack Webstad, of the Stswecem\u2019c Xgat\u2019tem First Nation near Williams Lake B.C., in memory of her first day at residential school in 1973. From the moment she was stripped of her orange she, she was made to feel\u00a0 &#8220;no one cared&#8221; and that she was \u2018&#8221;worth nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Board encouraged New Westminster Schools staff and student participation in events to mark the occasion. Canada&#8217;s\u00a0Indian Residential Schools forcibly removed nearly 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and\u00a0M\u00e9tis\u00a0children from their families to assimilate them into the dominant culture. More than 130 schools across Canada were built starting in\u00a0 the 1870s.
