and experience &#8211; the use of technology in learning,\u00a0 from media arts to 3D printers, robotics, and the &#8216;wow factor&#8217; of high-voltage Tesla coils&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Students demonstrate learning in multi-faceted ways&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>The Second Annual Maker Fair at the New Westminster Secondary School this week was clearly an adventure in science, crafts, engineering, videography, technology and creativity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8862\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8862\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/space.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"227\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A green screen allows students to replace a solid-colored background behind the subject of a photo or video with a new background &#8211; like outer space, or a U.S. Presidential rally.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But it was more than a gathering for hobbyists and techies.<\/p>\n<p>Students at NWSS are\u00a0 part of a paradigm shift happening in education &#8211; with more and more opportunities for innovative, creative ways to demonstrate learning in any number of academic subjects.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Rather than relying solely on written essays and tests, students are increasingly incorporating a hands-on approach to projects through the use of technology and other tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That means students in Jeff Meville&#8217;s social studies class, for instance, can explore the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8838 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/green-screen-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"259\" \/>French Revolution by using the\u00a0green screen, TV screen and camera in the NWSS library to change the backgrounds of photographs and videos.<\/p>\n<p>With a little imagination, they can situate themselves in a video of the march on Versailles or the burning of the Bastille to\u00a0 provide &#8216;live coverage&#8217; and on-the-spot analysis of living history, Meville explained.<\/p>\n<p>The digital media arts site is now a fixture in\u00a0 the NWSS library &#8211; or Learning Commons &#8211;\u00a0 and available for all students to use for a variety of projects.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the green screen during\u00a0 the Maker Fair was used for more light-hearted demonstrations for visiting classes &#8211;\u00a0 showing students floating in outer space, participating in body building contests, or mixing it on stage with US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8854 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GREENSCREEN-B-640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GREENSCREEN-B-640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GREENSCREEN-B-640-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\n<blockquote><p>Students from science, physics, English and math classes check out the digital arts station in the NWSS Library Learning Commons during the Maker Fair&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Ideas in action&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>In other instances, the &#8220;maker&#8217; approach to learning means that, for English Language Learning students, a project on social justice can go beyond a verbal or written analysis of the environmental costs of the fashion industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8865\" style=\"width: 382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8865\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ECOLLABORATION-640-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"285\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students take on the fashion industry by developing prototypes and marketing campaigns for recycled textiles&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead, two classes of students actually demonstrated ecologically responsible ideas by designing &#8216;up-cycle&#8217; clothing and making\u00a0 protoypes using recycled textiles.<\/p>\n<p>They also developed a marketing campaign\u00a0to go with their &#8220;Eco-llaboration Project&#8221; &#8211; using videographic support.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, their message of diverting 9.5 million tonnes of clothing headed to landfills in North America and reducing both fresh water and energy used in the global textile industry hits home that much more powerfully.<\/p>\n<h3>Student-led learning..<\/h3>\n<p>Student Eric Callaway is so interested in emerging technologies that he&#8217;s stepped into a newly created role at NWSS as the &#8216;learning technologist.&#8221;\u00a0 That gives him time to develop his expertise with 3-D printers, videography and other tools to provide technology support for both teachers and students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8880\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8880\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eric.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"278\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student Eric Callaway is the new NWSS Learning Technologist, developing skills in a variety of technologies and providing support to both teachers and students&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In response to a teacher request, for instance, he recently used the 3-D printer to create a three-dimensional version of the constellation of Orion that shows the relative distance and positions of its stars.<\/p>\n<p>As NWSS teacher-librarian Lorena Jones noted: &#8220;The use of technology is a huge change in learning, partly reflecting the technology focus of the job market and partly the drive for more\u00a0 inclusive learning opportunities beyond reading and writing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Engineering and Technology Education teacher Val Pontier noted that technology has both built barriers (when it is not user-centred) and removed them.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Maker Fair approach to learning can help bridge the gap between the theoretical and the tangible when students have the chance to build and make things. It also provides opportunities for students to work across a variety of disciplines such as science, engineering, art, craft,\u00a0 performance and more.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8841 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/engineers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/engineers.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/engineers-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\n<blockquote><p>Members of the engineering club in front of the green screen at the NWSS Learning Commons: the Maker Fair is spreading\u00a0 the message that technology is for everyone&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The role of technology in fostering\u00a0 &#8216;deep involvement&#8217;\u00a0 in education&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>At NWSS, student use of technology for projects in areas like Social Studies is currently a subject of research among a group of teachers. They are asking how the use of tools such as ipads, Chromebooks, green screens and video equipment will impact student learning.\u00a0The key question is whether such tools can raise the quality of student work and engagement when students are involved more deeply in the planning, design and construction of their own projects .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8888 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/crowd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"240\" \/>The research is supported through the New Westminster Schools &#8220;Innovation Learning Grants&#8221; program encouraging innovation and creativity in the classroom to support student learning.<\/p>\n<p>NWSS Principal John Tyler noted that the students&#8217; growing use of technology at NWSS &#8220;really shows how passionate they are about applying what they are learning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I&#8217;m impressed with is the range of engagement and the diversity of students involved in experiential learning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tyler said it&#8217;s having an impact on many of the school&#8217;s departments &#8211; from social studies classes to the library itself, which is less and less used as a\u00a0quiet place of solitary learning as it evolves into a Learning Commons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have taken out our bank of desktop computers and students are using portable Chromebook (computers), which allows them to gather together, work together, and collaborate on projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Maker Fair Tuesday welcomed drop-in visitors along with visits from six high school classes, including Science 10, Physics 11, Math, and International Baccalaureate English classes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8844 alignnone\" style=\"font-weight: 300;\" src=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Alex-from-Glenbrook-typewriter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Alex-from-Glenbrook-typewriter.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/archive_241212\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Alex-from-Glenbrook-typewriter-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\n<blockquote><p>An \u00c9cole Glenbrook Middle School student encounters\u00a0 a relatively ancient typewriter on display at the Maker Fair.
