March 14, 2018<\/em> \u2013 It was the right time and the right fit.<\/p>\n

The Board of Education announced today it has unanimously\u00a0agreed to appoint Karim Hachlaf Superintendent of New Westminster Schools\u00a0as the outstanding leader in a field of excellent candidates.<\/p>\n

The new position will be effective April 1, 2018.<\/p>\n

Mr. Hachlaf joined the district in August 2017 in the position of associate superintendent, after serving more than 17 years as a teacher, counsellor, District Administrator, Vice-Principal and Principal in the District of North Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to see Karim take our district to the next level at this particularly exciting time in the history of New Westminster Schools,\u201d said Mark Gifford, chair of the Board of Education.\u00a0\u00a0Although the board was impressed by the excellent quality of candidates who stepped forward following a\u00a0Canada-wide\u00a0search by PFM Executive Search, Mr. Hachlaf proved himself to be an outstanding contender and the best fit for the district in moving forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been impressed by Karim\u2019s commitment to New Westminster, the work ethic that he\u2019s demonstrated, and his vision of educational leadership.\u00a0\u00a0Even in his short time here, he\u2019s shown an impressive ability to build positive relationships with all of our stakeholder groups – from dedicated teachers, staff and principals and vice-principals, to students and families who haven\u2019t always felt heard,\u201d said Gifford.<\/p>\n

Mr. Hachlaf assumes the helm during a period of significant momentum in the district, both educationally in implementing British Columbia\u2019s redesigned curriculum,\u00a0\u00a0and at a time when several major capital projects providing new and upgraded schools are underway or have just been announced n New Westminster.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0\u00a0associate superintendent,\u00a0\u00a0Hachlaf assumed\u00a0a leadership role\u00a0<\/i>during and after the tenure of former Superintendent Pat Duncan\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in facilitating\u00a0 monumental progress on the state\u00a0a state-of-the-art replacement for New Westminster Secondary school, set to open in the fall of 2020. \u00a0He will also oversee the district as it undertakes a newly announced seismic replacement for the 89-year-old Richard McBride Elementary\u00a0 School, as well as a major seismic upgrade of \u00c9cole Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School.<\/span><\/p>\n

The district\u2019s interim superintendent Bev Rundell,\u00a0who has 35 years\u2019 experience in a variety of educational\u00a0\u00a0leadership positions –\u00a0 including a role as coach and mentor to superintendents in BC –\u00a0 said Hachlaf was clearly an educational\u00a0leader who can \u201cgenerate\u00a0\u00a0confidence and vision , facilitate collaboration, and encourage innovation both inside and outside the classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“Karim is able to\u00a0skillfully\u00a0manage the complex\u00a0and myriad\u00a0\u00a0aspects\u00a0of the New Westminster School district\u00a0\u00a0as it\u00a0\u00a0continuously\u00a0\u00a0strives for excellence and innovation in education,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
