We hold practice drills throughout the year so students know what to do during real emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the fire alarm sounds the same for all types of emergencies (and because it may take time to confirm the situation) it is critical that everyone leaves the building immediately when the alarm goes off, no matter where they are or what time it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No exceptions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adults must set the example for students by following this direction every time. It helps keep everyone safe.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\" style=\"color: #000000; \">Traffic safety<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\">\n\n<p>A crossing guard is on duty at Eighth Avenue and 22nd Street. All injuries, even minor ones, should be reported to a staff member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important that families provide the school with up-to-date emergency contact information, including names and phone numbers. Please also let the office know if your child has a severe allergy or another critical medical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medication can only be given at school with prior written authorization and medical instructions, and only for emergency or chronic conditions. Staff are not permitted to administer medication otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a student feels unwell, the teacher will refer them to the office. The school will contact parents or guardians if needed. The collection is available for families to check at any time at the school office. A few times a year, we also display the items for easier viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent loss or damage, students should not bring valuables to school. To reduce classroom disruptions and respect food sensitivities, we keep school-based celebrations simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019d like to acknowledge your child\u2019s birthday at school, please speak with the classroom teacher well in advance to make arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cupcakes or cookies may be appropriate, but we ask that cakes, ice cream, or other treats not be sent.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-7-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\" style=\"color: #000000; \">Peanut and nut allergies<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-7-cd7f4e7a-465e-4ab7-bc30-da08104b549d\">\n\n<p>Please note some students may have severe, life-threatening allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep everyone safe, we ask families to support our efforts to be a peanut- and tree nut\u2013aware school:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach your child to wash his\/her hands with soap and water before and after eating. This helps stop food from getting on other things like desks, toys and books. Washing hands is good for everyone, as it can also help reduce the spread of colds and flu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach your child not to share his\/her food, drinks or eating utensils with others. Many children love to share. Teach children to share non-food items instead (e.g. toys, stickers, games).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk to a school staff member about \u201callergy aware\u201d health and safety for more information.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety procedures overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our school follows rules from the Ministry of Education and Child Care to help keep students safe. We expect everyone to behave in a respectful and responsible way and want all students to feel safe and included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connaught Heights practices safety (e.g. fire, earthquake, lockdown) drills throughout the year. For example, a police incident in the immediate area, suspicious strangers on school grounds, or protests\/civil disturbances nearby.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-6b1608f2-9215-4a17-8af9-e27f159c77d1\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" style=\"color: #000000; \">2. Shelter in place<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\">\n\n<p><strong>Used if an environmental hazard may affect the school.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shelter in place shields staff and students from hazardous conditions outdoors by holding them inside the school. This action is often initiated in response to environmental or weather-related events (e.g. smoke\/chemical\/airborne contaminants, severe weather, dangerous animals, etc.) and typically requires closing the school\u2019s exterior doors and windows and shutting off ventilation systems.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-6b1608f2-9215-4a17-8af9-e27f159c77d1\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-2-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" style=\"color: #000000; \">3. Lockdown<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-2-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\">\n\n<p><strong>Used in response to an armed or dangerous assailant inside the school.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lockdowns are implemented to protect school occupants from a dangerous individual inside the building. For example, a person with a knife, firearm, or other weapon who is threatening to harm or is in the process of harming people.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-6b1608f2-9215-4a17-8af9-e27f159c77d1\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-3-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-01bd8b0c-e3a9-4405-b999-30db1ea978dd\" style=\"color: #000000; \">4.
