{"id":464,"date":"2025-07-03T14:17:47","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T18:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/nwss\/?page_id=464"},"modified":"2025-07-08T13:12:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T17:12:31","slug":"technology-education-adst","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newwestschools.ca\/nwss\/departments\/adst\/technology-education-adst\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology Education (ADST)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology education at NWSS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Technology Education department at NWSS offers hands-on learning in a variety of fields, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drafting and design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electronics and engineering (robotics and programming).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metalwork (including fabrication, jewellery, and bike maintenance).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Woodworking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also offer full-day apprenticeship programs in carpentry and plumbing. These programs are run in partnership with BCIT and the Piping Industry College. Students who complete them earn secondary school credits and Level 1 technical certification toward a Red Seal apprenticeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our classes mix theory with real-world skills, using STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) principles. Students learn through designing, building, and problem-solving. We use tools like 3D printers and CNC routers to stay current with new technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology 9 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology 9 introduces students to four key areas within technology education: drafting, metalwork, electronics and robotics, and woodworking. Through hands-on learning and short rotations, students gain practical skills and a sense of what each subject offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course emphasizes safety, tool use, and foundational techniques. By the end of the semester, students are better equipped to choose Grade 10 electives based on their interests and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of Technology 9 courses include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Woodwork 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drafting 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electronics and Robotics 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metalwork 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entrepreneurship and Marketing 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information and Communications Technologies 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Media Arts 9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Textiles 9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses offered by our department are based on the province\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum\/adst\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum\/adst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ADST curriculum<\/a>.
