Programs & Services - Family and Community - Parents' Night Out
Welcome! The Parents’ Night Out (PNO) Committee has been offering free, high quality education nights for parents and caregivers in New Westminster since 2007. Our goal is to gather information about issues affecting children and youth and recruit experts in the field to educate families.
The PNO Committee is made up of representatives from:
- District Parent Advisory Council
- Fraser Health
- New Westminster Police Department
- New Westminster School District
- New Westminster Youth Services
We are pleased to offer four PNO events per year.
October 22, 2019: New Westminster Students: Their Stories
Supporting happy and healthy kids: How to support your child’s well-being and their social emotional growth.
~ with Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, Ph.D.
Each year school districts in the province provide opportunities for students to share how they are doing in areas of well being, human connections, school experiences and community experiences.
On October 22 at the Justice Institute of BC, Dr. Schonert-Reichl explored what our children are saying and how families can support them in areas of social and emotional well being.
Dr. Schonert-Reichl, the Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership in the School of Population and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, is a renowned expert in the area of social and emotional learning (SEL) research with children and adolescents, particularly in relation to the identification of the processes and mechanisms that foster positive human qualities such as empathy, compassion, altruism, and resiliency.
Using student voice, Dr. Schonert-Reichl explored aspects of health and well-being for children at New Westminster Schools, including healthy sleep, nutrition, connection with adults and community connectedness.
