Welcoming and Wellness, in the centre of learning

The Welcome & Wellness Centre visions

The Welcome and Wellness Centres will be located in the neighbourhood learning spaces, in the heart of New Westminster Secondary School. Both will serve students and the whole community in very exciting ways!

The Welcoming Centre

The Welcome Centre space is all about bringing people into our community, in safe and collaborative ways. In this centre you’ll find our Registration Team, ready to support and enroll new families entering the District. Thanks to a partnership with the City of New Westminster, you’ll be able to connect with a City Navigator … a reference specialist who can help local residents explore and connect with all that the City has to offer. For those families new to Canada, the City Navigator will be able to connect them with community and in-house supports and services, such as settlement workers who can provide support in a variety of languages.

And we’re exceptionally proud to also be providing office space to the Qayqayt First Nation, on whose traditional and unceded territories we live, we learn, we play and we do our work.

The Welcome Centre: a community connector for all of New West, with meeting and programming space available for booking and use by other community groups and service providers.

The Wellness Centre

The Wellness Centre will act as a hub for delivering collaborative and holistic health and wellness supports … serving both students and the community. The innovative offerings will aim to deliver physical care – making it possible for students to see a health practitioner – in the same space they can also access counselling, other types of emotional and mental health supports, and engage in preventive educational and empowering workshops.

The key is the holistic part: physical, mental and emotional supports, available to deliver on prevention and support interventions.

By integrating these services we will remove barriers and solve for challenges many young people are currently facing: making it easier for them to receive wrap-around care and connect them with referrals they may need, in a space that’s welcoming and supportive to the diverse issues they may be facing.

And, it will also be a space where students, parents and others in the community can attend workshops and other supportive opportunities. These sessions could cover anything from building healthy eating and sleeping patterns, to coping with stress and anxiety. Regardless of topic, the goals of working towards prevention and building up individual capacity around mental and physical health will play an important role in the centre’s success.

The new Wellness Centre: holistic care, support and prevention, located in the centre of learning.

The investments needed

The vision is there. And we have community partners who are excited to be part of these innovative community plans! What’s missing are the internal walls and furnishings to make it possible. And that is where donors and community supporters come in!

By making a donation to either the Welcome or Wellness Centre, you can make a lasting impact in creating spaces that will serve the whole community … a legacy investment that will support New Westminster students and families now and into the future.

What might your donation be put toward?

  • Building private rooms for students and partners to have confidential conversations or examinations.
  • Furnish the spaces and provide resources to support non-profit partners who will deliver complimentary programs.
  • Furniture for open lounge or gathering spaces which may be used by students or the community. The lounges will also be safe spaces for students and community members to have access to reference materials and pamphlets from local service providers.

Our goal

In order to make this space a reality, we’re currently estimating it will cost: $450,000!
(Broken down: $200,000 for the Welcome Centre, and $250,000 for the Wellness Centre.)

Recognition

We need your support to meet this goal!

In recognition of the invaluable support you may be able to give, we would like to acknowledge our appreciation for your donation in the following ways:

  • Supporters ($20-$999 donations) will receive a thank you and tax receipt.
  • Community Partners ($1000-$4999 donations) will receive a thank you, tax receipt and acknowledgement on the District website for 1 year.
  • Community Champions ($5000 to $9999) will receive a thank you, tax receipt, acknowledgement on the District website for 1 year, and be named at the appropriate opening event.
  • For recognition on larger donations, please see attached:
