About the NWSS English Language Learners program

There’s no single profile for an English language learner. These students come from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds and they bring valuable perspectives to the NWSS community.

English Language Learning (ELL) programs help students develop fluency and literacy in English needed to function in NWSS’s social and academic environments.

In ELL courses, students build:

  • Social language skills for everyday conversations.
  • Academic language skills for success in the classroom.
  • Strategies for learning, studying and problem-solving.
  • Speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills.

Courses

Students are assessed using Ministry of Education and Child Care’s rubrics for reading, writing, and oral language. Based on their overall level, they are placed in one of the appropriate courses:

  • English Language Learners 1
  • English Language Learners 2
  • English Language Learners 3
  • English Language Learners 4
