Music

This course offers students the chance to play stringed instruments (e.g. violin, viola, cello or upright bass) in a group setting. Beginners receive step-by-step instruction on technique, bowing and reading standard notation, while more advanced students work with challenging repertoire and often take on leadership roles as section leaders or first chair.

The class also welcomes wind players and advanced guitar students to collaborate in small ensembles and mixed-instrument groups. Emphasis is placed on ensemble playing, reading music, and developing a strong sense of rhythm and timing.

Students rehearse and perform in a variety of settings, from large ensembles to small groups and, occasionally, as soloists. The class performs in multiple concerts throughout the year, including a winter showcase in December and two performances in the spring.

NWSS is known for its strong choral program, where students build vocal skills and confidence.

The program includes concerts, festivals, clinics with guest artists, and opportunities to travel. Past tours have taken students to Cuba, New York City, Ottawa, San Francisco, and more.

A variety of choral opportunities are open to students at all levels:

• Concert choir – Open to all grades and experience levels.
• Chamber choir – An auditioned ensemble for experienced singers in grades 10–12. Full-year course with a spring tour.
• Vocal jazz (levels 1 and 2) – Placement determined by the teacher.
• Senior choir – An intermediate-level ensemble for students in grades 10–12.
