About trades at NWSS
Getting involved in a trades and apprenticeship program gives students an edge, whether they’re aiming for Red Seal certification, planning to start a business, or looking to continue into post-secondary education.
These programs offer hands-on, industry-relevant skills and a head start on post-secondary training, helping students transition smoothly into high-demand careers careers while still attending secondary school.
Post-secondary tuition for trades training is fully covered by the school district.
Trades and apprenticeship testimonials
On-site training
NWSS offers three school-based TRAIN programs for students in Grades 11 and 12:
Plumbing Level 1
- Learn to plan, design, install, and service a variety of piping systems.
- Work with water heating, supply, and drainage systems.
- Develop skills in blueprint reading, basic drafting, and sketching.
- Gain hands-on experience using industry-specific tools and machinery.
Carpentry Foundation
- Build a wide range of structures using wood, wood substitutes, and other materials.
- Assemble and erect forms for both concrete and wood-frame construction.
- Read blueprints and use layout instruments to prepare for excavating and shoring.
- Develop a broad set of carpentry skills, with experience in both residential and commercial construction.
- Learn alongside Red Seal Carpenters at NWSS and BCIT.
Professional Cook Level 1
- Plan, design, install, and service a range of piping systems.
- Work with water heating, supply, and drainage systems.
- Read blueprints and build foundational drafting and sketching skills.
- Safely operate industry-specific tools and machinery.
These programs are delivered in partnership with the UA Piping Industry College of BC, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), and Vancouver Community College (VCC), respectively. Each program runs for one semester and can fit into most students’ schedules alongside academic courses in the alternate semester.
These are dual credit opportunities. Students earn both Grade 12 graduation credits and post-secondary credits. Post-secondary tuition is fully covered by New Westminster Schools.

Off-site dual credit trades programs
We also offer a range of off-campus TRAIN programs for Grade 12 students, which take place at partner post-secondary institutions during the second semester of their final year. Examples of options include:
- CNC machinist
- Automotive service
- Heavy mechanical trades
- Auto collision and refinishing
- Aircraft maintenance engineer
- Baking and pastry arts foundation
- Electrical foundation
- Metal fabrication foundation
- Cabinetmaking
- Welding
- Millwright
- Motorcycle technician
- Appliance technician
- Horticulture
- Hair design
Like our school-based options, these programs are dual credit and tuition-free. Because spaces in specific programs are reserved well in advance, it’s important to start planning early.

Youth Work in Trades Scholarship
The Youth Work in Trades (WRK) Scholarship offers $1,000 to help students cover tuition and training costs after high school. To qualify, students must be registered as youth apprentices with SkilledTradesBC.
Up to 600 scholarships are awarded each year. Applications are submitted online and must include details about financial needs during training.
