About our school

New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS) is one of the largest high schools in British Columbia with approximately 2,500 students in Grades 9 through 12.

Students have access to a wide range of academic and elective programs, including International Baccalaureate, French Immersion, performing arts, athletics, and skilled trades pathways. There are also many opportunities for students to explore their interests through clubs, activities, and other extracurricular options.

Our school community values diversity, inclusion, and strong relationships. Together, we work to create a supportive environment where students feel connected and are encouraged to grow.

At NWSS, our shared goal is to help students become responsible citizens and lifelong learners. Our school community promotes three guiding principles:

  • Respect for Learning
  • Respect for the Environment
  • Respect for Self and Others

Safety procedures overview

Our school follows rules from the Ministry of Education and Child Care to help keep students safe. We expect everyone to behave in a respectful and responsible way and want all students to feel safe and included.

NWSS practices safety (e.g. fire, earthquake, lockdown) drills throughout the year. We ask all parents at the start of each school year to update their contact and emergency information.

In an emergency, the school will work with local police, fire services, the city, health services, and child and family services to respond as needed.
