NWSS Athletics Department
Welcome to the home of the NWSS Hyacks.
Athletics are an important part of school life at New Westminster Secondary. With support from dedicated staff, students have opportunities to develop their physical, group communication, and collaborative skills by being part of a team and challenging themselves.
What is a “hyack”?
The name “Hyack” traces back to 1861, when New Westminster’s first fire department was established as “Hyack Company No. 1”. Drawn from the Chinook dialect, “Hyack” means “quick” or “fast”, which is a fitting word to reflect the speed and bravery of the city’s early firefighters.
In 1967, “Hyacks” was chosen as the name for New Westminster Secondary’s athletic teams. The name honours the legacy of those firefighters and the values they represent: strength, courage, loyalty, respect, responsibility, and readiness.
