What is RULER?
RULER is a research-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL), developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. It helps students, educators, and families build emotional intelligence skills and supports a positive school climate.
RULER focuses on five key skills:
- Recognizing emotions in yourself and others.
- Understanding the causes and effects of emotions.
- Labeling emotions accurately.
- Expressing emotions appropriately.
- Regulating emotions effectively.
By teaching these “soft skills” with evidence-based methods, RULER strengthens how we learn, teach, parent, and lead.
