New Westminster schools are welcoming learning and working environments for everybody, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Through supporting inclusive schools and classrooms, the district aims to creates safe spaces in which staff and students can learn and grow.
Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) education means discussing SOGI in a way that makes all students feel like they are welcome – regardless of their identity or orientation – and, broadly, about the importance of treating others with dignity and respect.
SOGI at New Westminster schools
SOGI education at district schools are not a curriculum in and of itself. SOGI is part of a framework that includes policies and practices that aim to create inclusive communities where all students are welcome, and none are discriminated against or limited by their gender or sexual identity.

The initiative is a collaboration between SOGI 123, the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, the ARC Foundation, and receives financial support from the Province of BC through the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
