New Westminster schools believes it is essential to teach our students the skills necessary to use, create, and interact with technology ethically, competently, and thoughtfully, to become responsible digital citizens.

Integrating technology seamlessly into our curriculum is a key part in being an innovative school district that prepares students for lifelong learning. A BYOD (bring your own device) program improves access to online resources, digital tools, and assistive technology. It enhances learning by enabling digital collaboration, boosting communication skills, and creates opportunities for digital projects. It also allows teachers to provide timely feedback.

Schools participating in BYOD (district middle and high school) encourage students to bring a personal electronic device, such as a Windows laptop, to school each day for use in learning activities. Students who do not have a device will be given access to district-owned equipment while at school.

Note:

  • Teachers will never ask students to download apps or programs without parental permission.
  • Only one (1) device is allowed. Students must bring the same device to school each day.
  • Unless explicitly permitted by teachers, mobile phones are not approved as BYOD devices.

Minimum recommended device specifications for BYOD

A Microsoft Windows-based device is recommended. However, alternatives such as Apple MacBooks, Chromebooks, or tablets are acceptable (assuming the hardware is not more than four years old).

Recommended Windows-based device specifications

  • Processor: Intel Pentium Silver N6000/N6005 or better.
  • RAM: 8GB or more.
  • Storage: 128GB or more. A solid state drive (SSD or eMMC) is recommended.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 or higher.

Recommended optional features:

  • An external mouse
  • A webcam privacy curtain
  • A rugged and compact carrying case
  • A device with touchscreen capability
