Every school board in B.C. has an Indigenous Education Council (IEC). The IEC helps the board give fair and full support to Indigenous students, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learners. The council gives advice on how to include Indigenous views and knowledge in schools. It also helps with decisions about funding for Indigenous students and supports respect for local First Nations. This includes using local languages, traditions, and cultural practices in schools.

There are still big differences in school success between Indigenous students—especially First Nations students living on reserves—and other students. To help fix this, schools need to make changes. IECs give school boards a clear way to focus on the needs of Indigenous students in public schools.

In 2019, B.C. passed the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. This law supports the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. B.C.’s action plan for this law includes goals to improve education for Indigenous students. One of these goals is to create and support IECs.
